When planning branch-library services, resource allocation does not mean only “getting the right stuff to the right people,” but also allocating staff time as well. Staff at Evansville Vanderburgh Public Library (EVPL) can use Encore Reporter to track user circulation behavior by-the-hour—at any of their branches. All it takes is opening the Hourly Circulation by Transaction Location (pictured) report and clicking facets to drill down to limits that are even more precise.

The Power of The Hour: Screen detail shows year-to-date, hourly circulation across three locations.

The Hourly Circulation by Transaction Location (pictured) report provides facets so that library staff can quickly drill down to information that is more specific, such as which self-check units are busiest at a given hour, or what item-type is represented most in circulation transactions. Encore Reporter also provides a report for Hourly Circulation by Day of the Week.

“You can be creative with Encore Reporter,” says Mollie Pharo, Collection Development Manager. “As we continue to explore the potential of the product, I sit down on occasion and think creatively about real issues and challenges we have. Then I just take my questions to the Millennium ILS data in the Encore Reporter interface. The harder part of the process is thinking what you want to know and the easier part is getting the information!”

EVPL is a development partner for the Encore Reporter product, which offers an array of elegant and easy to use features and reports such as: Key performance indicators, facets & drill-down capabilities, Google Maps™ mash-ups, circulation and patron trends, transit information, Popular Titles, Acquisitions / Collection development, and more. For more about Encore Reporter, please write us at info@encoreforlibraries.com.

Powerful, Visually-Appealing Reporting is a “Click Away”

January 17, 2010

Innovative Interfaces announced today that Encore Reporter™ is installed and in use in the following public libraries: eLGAR (Libraries for a Greater Auckland Region) (New Zealand); Evansville Vanderburgh Public Library (IN); Jefferson County Public Library (CO); Multnomah County Library (OR); Naperville Public Library (IL); San Diego County Library (CA); Toledo-Lucas County Public Library (OH); and the Tulsa City-County Library (OK). Encore Reporter provides the basis for more-informed decisions by library staff by providing dynamic and visually elegant reports on key performance indicators, operational statistics, patron and material usage analysis, and more. Encore Reporter includes a suite of new reports, such as hourly-level circulation transactions, summaries of patron registration and borrowing activity by patron ZIP code, resource-sharing statistics, and more.

Building on the powerful Encore Framework™, Encore Reporter’s seamless data analysis and presentation means complete and accurate reporting on all aspects of a library’s operation. “We continue to improve on the quality, the access to, and the depth of the information that Encore Reporter provides,” says Vice President at Innovative Aaron Blazer. “For example, Encore Reporter can now tell staff circulation statistics for each hour, even at self-check stations, within a single branch. Plus, our rapid-iteration with development-partner libraries provides a steady stream of enhancements to the product. Our academic and public library customers tell us that they need to make smart decisions about staffing and collections and Encore Reporter gives them the sophisticated information they need, simply.”

Multnomah County Library “Pumps Up the Volume” on Reports

Northwest Oregon’s Multnomah County Library (MCL) operates in a "high-volume" environment. Not only in terms of the number of book volumes, but in the sheer volume of user activity. With up to 240,000 holds in the Millennium system at a given time, across 19 locations and 400 square miles, smart staffing choices and optimization of workflow are crucial for library staff. With an eye toward ever-improving service through better information, MCL has joined with Innovative as a development partner for Encore Reporter.

This new product brings the power and sophistication of Encore to the business of libraries, featuring the latest visual display and discovery tools such as maps and facets and driven by a new, underlying multi-dimensional data structure. Encore Reporter harvests Millennium ILS data to provide statistics that cover a wide range of library operations and user activity— from patron activity, to circulation, to e-journals, to expenditures, and more.

Encore Reporter displaying Google Maps™ mash up of a Zip Code Map displaying 2009 to-date circulation data. Mouse-over image displays circulation of 398,747 for the 92730 ZIP code during this period.

Although library staff "slice and dice data" across many axes just by clicking facets—for literally hundreds of options at a glance—a number of data-sets proved immediately useful to staff. For example, Encore Reporter provides a Transaction Location Trends Report filtered by location. Says Steve Casburn, ILS Coordinator: "As a multi-branch library, this is a huge situation for us. Essentially, we need to know what location did the item come from that is being checked out at given location. This tells us how items are being moved about the system as they are used."

Library staff know that it takes more staff time to process a hold than to just do a checkout of a book already on the shelves. Clicking another facet on the same Transaction Location Trends Report limited by holds-filled exposes this information quickly. Says Casburn: “Knowing the locations where users commonly pick up items lets us make the right staffing choices. It is a fantastic number to make decisions with.”

The most visually arresting feature of Encore Reporter is the Google Maps™ mash-up (pictured). "The ZIP Code Maps Report gives us a clear and simple overview of where our patrons live. When we click the location facet we can see where people are coming from to each location. An example of how that helps us: Many of our patrons live outside the county and use our library via reciprocal borrowing agreements. For our branches near the county lines, we can see how many patrons are coming to them from outside the county and where exactly they are coming from. That’s cool." At present, sixteen libraries, divided equally among public and academic institutions, are part of the Encore development partnership, ensuring there will be options
of value to any type of library.

Release date: November 11, 2009

Innovative announced today that the development of Encore Reporter, the product that brings the power and ease of Encore Discovery to library-business information, now benefits from the participation of a group of academic libraries that has grown to eight. These libraries are focusing on further developing the features of Encore Reporter that provide collection- and cost-analysis reports to library staff. The academic libraries partnering with Innovative are Ballarat University (Australia); Michigan State University; Stetson School of Law (FL); University of Cadiz (Spain); University of Nebraska, Lincoln; University of Sydney (Australia); University of Wollongong (Australia), and Washington College of Law at American University (DC).

Encore Reporter provides multi-dimensional and visually elegant reports on key performance indicators, operational statistics, patron and material usage analysis, print and e-resource usage, collection development, and more. Encore Reporter empowers library staff to make more informed decisions, which is more important than ever in a challenging service and economic environment.

Says Billie Jo Kaufman of Washington College of Law at American University (DC): “As a Chair of the American Bar Association’s Committee on Libraries, I know it is important to get the right statistics, and get them easily, in the format that funders and other organizations want. What Encore Reporter will do is to present our data and allow us to see it from a number of angles that will give us more and better information. Essentially, we will get more out of the data that we put in the Millennium system, in terms of content, and how it is used.”

The group of academic partners complements the existing group of eight public libraries involved in the Encore Reporter development project.
