Syracuse University is now live with Encore Discovery™. The library has implemented Innovative’s discovery services platform as a front-end to their existing Voyager™ ILS provided by Ex Libris, Ltd.

Says Library Project Manager Terriruth Carrier: “Students have adjusted to a new model of interacting with information in the form of social networking tools and Google. Encore gives them a similar experience and a quick way to exploit the benefits of the classic online catalog. Encore lets students and researchers type in whatever they are interested in and easily hone in for details with features such as facets and the Tag Cloud.”

Powerful, Visually-Appealing Reporting is a “Click Away”

January 17, 2010

Innovative Interfaces announced today that Encore Reporter™ is installed and in use in the following public libraries: eLGAR (Libraries for a Greater Auckland Region) (New Zealand); Evansville Vanderburgh Public Library (IN); Jefferson County Public Library (CO); Multnomah County Library (OR); Naperville Public Library (IL); San Diego County Library (CA); Toledo-Lucas County Public Library (OH); and the Tulsa City-County Library (OK). Encore Reporter provides the basis for more-informed decisions by library staff by providing dynamic and visually elegant reports on key performance indicators, operational statistics, patron and material usage analysis, and more. Encore Reporter includes a suite of new reports, such as hourly-level circulation transactions, summaries of patron registration and borrowing activity by patron ZIP code, resource-sharing statistics, and more.

Building on the powerful Encore Framework™, Encore Reporter’s seamless data analysis and presentation means complete and accurate reporting on all aspects of a library’s operation. “We continue to improve on the quality, the access to, and the depth of the information that Encore Reporter provides,” says Vice President at Innovative Aaron Blazer. “For example, Encore Reporter can now tell staff circulation statistics for each hour, even at self-check stations, within a single branch. Plus, our rapid-iteration with development-partner libraries provides a steady stream of enhancements to the product. Our academic and public library customers tell us that they need to make smart decisions about staffing and collections and Encore Reporter gives them the sophisticated information they need, simply.”

Active Partnerships

The development-partner group for Encore Reporter continues to contribute to the development of the product. The group currently includes: American University, Washington College of Law (DC); eLGAR (Libraries for a Greater Auckland Region) (New Zealand); Evansville Vanderburgh Public Library (IN); Jefferson County Public Library (CO); Michigan State University; Multnomah County Library (OR); Naperville Public Library (IL); San Diego County Library (CA); Stetson University College of Law (FL); Toledo-Lucas County Public Library (OH); Tulsa City-County Library (OK); University of Ballarat (Australia); University of Nebraska, Lincoln; University of Sydney; and University of Wollongong (Australia).

Release date: November 11, 2009

Innovative announced today that the development of Encore Reporter, the product that brings the power and ease of Encore Discovery to library-business information, now benefits from the participation of a group of academic libraries that has grown to eight. These libraries are focusing on further developing the features of Encore Reporter that provide collection- and cost-analysis reports to library staff. The academic libraries partnering with Innovative are Ballarat University (Australia); Michigan State University; Stetson School of Law (FL); University of Cadiz (Spain); University of Nebraska, Lincoln; University of Sydney (Australia); University of Wollongong (Australia), and Washington College of Law at American University (DC).

Encore Reporter provides multi-dimensional and visually elegant reports on key performance indicators, operational statistics, patron and material usage analysis, print and e-resource usage, collection development, and more. Encore Reporter empowers library staff to make more informed decisions, which is more important than ever in a challenging service and economic environment.

Says Billie Jo Kaufman of Washington College of Law at American University (DC): “As a Chair of the American Bar Association’s Committee on Libraries, I know it is important to get the right statistics, and get them easily, in the format that funders and other organizations want. What Encore Reporter will do is to present our data and allow us to see it from a number of angles that will give us more and better information. Essentially, we will get more out of the data that we put in the Millennium system, in terms of content, and how it is used.”

The group of academic partners complements the existing group of eight public libraries involved in the Encore Reporter development project.

Joan Giesecke, Dean of Libraries, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and Interim Director, University of Nebraska Press, wrote to us sharing great news about the way her campus has responded to the opportunity to participate in Encore Discovery:

“We have a new ethics center on campus that wanted a library collection for the center. Instead of trying to create another branch library, we introduced them to tagging in Encore. They have now tagged over 300 books with the tag ‘Ethics Center’ so when you search under that term you get materials on applied ethics and the teaching of ethics – subjects that are difficult to search in traditional subject headings without using a lot of terms. Tagging is a way to create a specialized collection that is virtual and easy to find.”

See for yourself in this search for ethics center on UNL’s Encore implementation.

Dee Ann Allison, Professor & Director COR Services, tells us: “None of this participation is creating extra work for the staff. We haven’t had to delete one of the hundreds of community tags yet. Some of them may look a little weird and you might not know what they mean–’alien weeds’ for example–but they are clearly valuable to some of our users. In this case those users turn out to be to agriculture students studying invasive plant species.”

Participation is powerful! There’s more to be found about community tagging on the Encore website.

Back to The Land, Back to the Library

Encore is a modern tool for easy discovery of anything your library wants to offer, and, by extension, it is an easy way to promote aspects of the collections that are truly local. An particularly “earthy” example is St. Lawrence University Library’s (NY) pilot project to build, digitize and then harvest a special collection into Encore called Back to the Land Movement in St. Lawrence County (1960-Present). The Dublin Core metadata that will be harvested is an ideal format for easy discovery by users and deployment into a variety of contexts such as OAIster and Innovative’s Encore discovery platform.

Starting four decades ago, St. Lawrence County was one of dozens of rural destinations in the US to attract the attention of “back-to-the-landers,” a broad movement of mostly young people seeking anti-materialistic lifestyles in rural settings. The back-to-the-landers established communes and individual homesteads, experimented with alternatives to the cash economy, and tried to sustain themselves through farming and other land-based ventures. Over the years, they also became engaged citizens of the county, greatly influencing public life in the region.

Three key components of the digital archival project are to search the published record for citations; conduct fieldwork in St. Lawrence County; and invite those associated with the back-to-the-land community to submit copies of their own photographs, journals, and newsletters for inclusion into the collection. The collection will consist of 3,000-4,000 items such as journals, books, newsletters, ephemera, recorded interviews, and photographs created by back-to-the-landers in the county and by those who have documented this movement.

Says Bart Harloe, University Librarian: “Despite the great significance of back-to-the-landers to the history and culture of St. Lawrence County, no systematic effort has ever been made to assemble a research collection on the subject. The partners in this project aim to amass as complete a record of this population as possible.”

The collection is just one of three harvesting projects that also include the Dwight P. Church Photography Collection and Nsukka Artists and Contemporary Nigerian Art Collection. The latter fits perfectly with the curricula offered through St. Lawrence University’s African Studies program and Kenya Study Abroad program. Each entails bringing OAI-compliant metadata into the Encore catalog, side by side with e-journals and book titles.

Harloe continues: “An Encore search will provide a very good picture of what kinds of resources are available, their history and strengths, and a one-step search for articles across the various disciplines. The addition of these three collections, including Back to the Land, is going to blend in as a bellwether of our contribution to the campus and integral to teaching and research.”

Encore quite simply offers up the best from the world of information, plus the ability to bring local collections in the mix that bring folks back to the library, literally and figuratively. In the case of St. Lawrence University…Back to the Land and back to the library!

Innovative announced today that eleven academic libraries across Asia, Australia, Europe, and North America have gone live with Encore: Andrews University (MI), British Columbia Institute of Technology (Canada), Cal Poly Pomona (CA), Chinese University of Hong Kong, Cooperating Libraries in Consortium (MN), Chulalongkorn University (Thailand), Hong Kong Polytechnic University (China), St. Edward’s University (TX), Universidad de Cadiz (Spain), University of Tulsa (OK), and University of Wollongong (Australia).

About Encore

The Encore discovery services platform transforms how users uncover the rich and varied resources the library has to offer by uniting content, community, and discovery. No matter which ILS a library uses or its level of development resources or staff expertise Encore provides a reliable solution that makes it easy to offer the latest information technologies. At its core is the Encore Framework developed using modern, Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) software design principles. The Framework supports a suite of robust applications and Web Service offerings that can be tailored to meet the needs of any library. What’s more, Encore Services provides a dedicated “Pit Crew” that backs the product with single-day, in-library installation, hosted options (SaaS), and more. With Encore, it’s all right here.

St. Lawrence University (NY) utilized Encore Harvesting Services to produce a single unified search of its OAI-PMH-compliant collections. The first collection is an institutional repository of seven regional liberal arts schools, called LASR (Liberal Arts Scholarly Repository), described in Qualified Dublin Core(SM) on a DSpace™ platform; the second is an image and video database of the University’s art gallery, described in Qualified Dublin Core(SM) and/or VRA Core on a CONTENTdm® platform.

“We want to use Encore to make these unique, local collections available through a single search just like any other collection we make available, such as our books and e-journals,” says Bart Harloe, University Librarian. “We were looking for a different search experience that is not linear but dynamic, like Google. Encore gets us there.”

Harloe continues: “The institutional repository collection brings unique research from our campus to a main point of search. With the art gallery content, we are trying to make visual resources more prominent in our community. Putting images in the Encore environment also makes the experience more dynamic and more visually stimulating. We will even include art produced by our students. In the future, we will extend the Harvesting Services project to include local, archival material.”

Why Innovative? Says Harloe: “We’ve had a productive, long-term relationship with Innovative. Providing a more internet-like search experience of our library is the next logical step.”
